Bible Studies

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Proverbs 27:17

At Church of the Servant, we believe that becoming a fully-committed follower of Christ involves more than simply coming to worship each week. It is a three-fold process that involves worship, service, and small group experiences. One way of becoming involved in a small group is by joining in one of the several Bible and book studies that are being offered each fall and spring. Consider becoming a part of one of these classes and you will enjoy great teaching, discussion, and prayer while building friendships that enrich your life. For more information, email a PASTOR.

The Wednesday Evening Pastor's Study with Thomas Hoffmann starts up again beginning January 17, at 6:30 PM. For the next few weeks Rev. Dr. Hoffmann will finish up his study of "The Power of Christ Within You." You do not have to have attended before to enjoy this class about how we really can be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ to a hurting world.

Then, beginning on February 14, following our Ash Wednesday evening service, Pastor Thomas will begin a Lenten study entitled, "Embracing the Uncertain." Each week for seven weeks, different figures in the Bible will be studied. We'll learn how a desperate father, an anxious crowd, a curious onlooker, and even a man left for dead learned from Jesus how to walk through uncertain times--and how Jesus can help us today.

Finally, starting after Easter, Pastor Thomas will shift to the certainty of the resurrection, and what it means to "Live the Abundant Life." Jesus said in John 10:10, "I have come so that everyone will have life, and have it abundantly." Let's find out how to have the quality of life that Jesus wants for us.

SOAPY

Below is a pattern for daily Bible Study.  It is called “SOAPY,” using the first letter in the five steps. Daily texts can be found online or by using a daily reading guide. You will need a Bible and some form of journal.  Spiral notebooks, three ring notebooks or bound journals work well.  Begin with a prayer, opening your heart to God.

S - SCRIPTURE: Read the scripture passage aloud. Then, write the scripture in your journal. If it is long, write out the parts that are significant to you. Reading and writing the passage will help put the scripture in your mind and heart.

O - OBSERVATION: What do you notice about the passage?  What is happening?  What might the passage tell you about the nature of God or the person of Jesus Christ?  What truths can you glean about yourself? What might God like to teach you through this scripture? Write your thoughts.

A - APPLICATION: Ask “How does this scripture apply to my life?” Look for promises in which to take comfort, attitudes to change, challenges to accept, sins to confess, commands to obey, actions to take, examples to follow, or skills to learn. Write in your journal how the scripture applies to your own life. Be specific.

P - PRAYER: Write a prayer to God.  The prayer might be one of praise and thanksgiving, a prayer asking God to help you apply the teaching to your life, a prayer of confession or a prayer of release.

Y - YIELDING: Ask “What in my life must I yield to God?” This is a question that leads to obedience. Every day, through this Bible study, you will have the opportunity to yield a little more of your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

On January 23, Dr. Gunter will commence a new series on Matthew — “Meeting Jesus Again . . . for the First Time.”
Every lesson will include music and time for table discussion. We are highlighting this new series as DISCOVERY BIBLE. Participants will be given the opportunity to receive a 3-ring binder for their study notes – outlines will be printed out and hole-punched each week, ready to save.
